Mike Smith takes over at Meni

Michael “Mike” Smith succeeded as Harold R Inman as chief executive of Mobil Exploration Norway Inc (Meni) on 1 July 1982. Born on 9 January 1936 in the UK, he was an American citizen.

After joining Mobil in 1957 as production head for Canada, Smith was appointed head of production for Meni in September 1977 and later promoted to exploration and production manager.

He transferred to head office in New York as manager for oil and gas planning on 1 April 1981. After his service in Norway, he became chief executive of Mobil Oil Canada Ltd in August 1986.

President Carter visits Statfjord A
It is not every day that Norway gets a visit from an American president, but 4 May 1982 was one such occasion. That was when Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn took a trip out to Statfjord A, which was operated at the time by Mobil Exploration Norway Inc (Meni).

SAR helicopter in place
A search and rescue (SAR) helicopter has been stationed permanently on Statfjord B since 1983 as part of the emergency response organisation.
