Production drilling began on Statfjord A on 30 November 1978. Four wells were completed initially and had to be tested before output started.

Well A33 was the first producer to be readied. It was opened at 21.30 on Sunday 20 October 1979, and first oil reached the topside exactly at midnight.

A volume corresponding to 7 000 barrels per day was produced through a 32/64-inch choke. No sand came up from the well, which was good news.
