Exploration drilling begins
The first well in the Statfjord area was spudded on 1 December 1973 from Waage Drill I.
This rig had been towed across the Atlantic that autumn after its delivery by Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans.
The well aimed to determine whether Britain’s Brent discovery extended into the Norwegian continental shelf. It turned out that the field did not cross the boundary. Instead, Mobil made a separate discovery – Statfjord – which extended into the UK North Sea.
